Spotting the difference between a styled shoot and a real wedding can be quite easy once you know what to look for. Here’s what both terms mean: A styled shoot is a collaborative effort of multiple vendors who put their talents and resources together to create a visual concept to be photographed. A real wedding is a collection of photographs taken from a wedding where a couple gets married in front of their friends and family.

Why is it Important to Know the Difference?

Specifically, it lets you know the level of experience a planner or designer has. If you notice only styled shoots on their wesite or Instagram, chances are they are new to the business. Whenever a photographer, stationery vendor, wedding planner, rental company, venue, wedding dress and tux vendors come together, it can create a look that mimics a real wedding.

Here’s How to Spot the Difference

Although I have never done a styled shoot, I am choosing some pictures from my portfolio that could be an example of a styled shoot. Indeed, there is nothing wrong with doing styled shoots. Moreover, in many cases they give you exquisite photos for your portfolio. And you can give couples a lot of inspiration. I only take notice of this when websites or Instagram pages only show styled shoots. If there are no real weddings in their website or Insta, chances are this planner is new to the business. But you have to start somewhere!
